Blog 1 Roles research

Job roles research

Charles B Handy defines a team as “any collection of people who perceive themselves to be a group”, and me and my team agree with this, however we will be more than just a “collection of people”, we have so far have operated as an organised and mature group of people who all strive for the same task. We have done some research on team work, and the studies of R M Belbin and we have found out that a team can be more than just a few individuals accomplishing a task. It’s more organised and civilised than that simplicity of an explanation. R M Belbin found nine major roles in a team. These are labels given to each member of a team (sometimes more than one label per person) which define how they act and work in the work place. These include roles such as chairman and company workers. We have used these roles to try and help us with our project, by making ourselves more organised as a team.
We have decided to only use seven of these nine roles within our group, as we find the other two unnecessary and too advanced for our level of work. Here is a list and definition of the nine roles which R M Belbin has researched and defined.
Chairman – This is the role of the team leader or head. This persons role is important in the workplace as he is the one who makes all the big decisions, outlines the goals and generally organises the team
Shaper – Adds positive energy towards the team and keeps motivated. The shaper works best under pressure and likes to overcome the obstacles in their path
Plant – The plant is the person who solves difficult problems, and creates innovative and original ideas which is put forward to the team
Evaluator - This person is the strategist of the group, he also takes a big part in decision making and has generally good judgement when implanting his decisions
Resource Investigator – This person helps with material and researching. The resource investigator is the person who develops contacts with different companies or persons and helps bring in resources to the team. He also makes use of good opportunities.
Company worker – The company worker is the person who does a lot of practical work. They apply ideas and concepts and use these ideas to carry out their work. They are co-operative and they listen to other members.
Finisher – This person ensure that the group effort achieve the standard of which the group want it to. They help out with fixing problems at the end of the project and maintain a sense of urgency towards the deadline. The make sure they meet that deadline.
As you can see most if not all are essential to a fully functioning and competent team. So we have given 3 roles to each of our team members (Jacob Barron, Chris Collins and Muhsen Sayed Ali). As shown in the table we have given each member of our team a role according to what we feel our personalities are. After our research we figured out our team and felt that our positions in the teams were suited to our personalities.
